Deciding whether to drink is a personal decision that we each eventually have to make.

As college students, many of you may choose to drink alcohol during your time in SETU. It is important to do so safely, as alcohol can have huge effects on your mood, judgement and may pose serious health risks to yourself or others. If you plan on drinking ensure you are in a safe environment and have organized a way home. Also, remember to cover your drink while out and if you suspect someone has spiked you or anyone else please report it as soon as possible.

Remember that you should never feel pressured into consuming alcohol or go beyond your limit – its okay to say no!

What is considered low risk alcohol consumption?

  • For Women over 18: 11 or less standard drinks spread over the week.
  • People who are pregnant should not consume alcohol.
  • For Men over 18: 17 or less standard drinks spread over the week.
  • At least two days of the week should be alcohol free.

It is unsafe and illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to consume alcohol.

What is a standard drink?

  • In Ireland, it is considered 10 grams of pure alcohol.
  • This can be 1/2 pint of beer, 100ml glass of wine, or 35.5ml measure of spirit.

What are some of the health effects of drinking too much alcohol?

How can I consume less alcohol on a night out?

  • Alternate each drink with a glass of water
  • Finish your drink before pouring another
  • Get half pints instead of full pints
  • Decide on how much you want to drink before going out
  • Use cash at the bar instead of a card

  • Better long-term physical health
  • Lower caloric intake which helps to maintain a healthy weight
